Kinetic Particle Theory
Kinetic Particle Theory explains the properties of matter and changes of state by assuming matter consists of tiny particles (atoms, molecules, or ions) in continuous motion 1. The average kinetic energy of these particles is directly proportional to the absolute temperature 2.

Fixed Lattice Random Fluid Flow Fast Random Motion
Vibration Only Slide Past Each Other Far Apart
- Solid: Particles packed closely in a regular lattice; vibrate around fixed positions; strong forces keep fixed shape and fixed volume.
- Liquid: Particles in close contact but randomly arranged; can slide past one another; moderate forces allow flowing to take container shape while maintaining fixed volume.
- Gas: Particles widely separated with negligible intermolecular attraction; move rapidly in random directions; expand to fill any container volume.
Explaining Physical Phenomena
Kinetic Particle Theory models:
- Phase Transitions: Adding thermal energy increases particle vibrations or velocities, overcoming intermolecular bonds during melting, boiling, and evaporation. Cooling removes energy, allowing attractive forces to re-bind particles during condensation and freezing 1.
- Diffusion: Random thermal collisions cause net migration of particles from high to low concentration regions 2.
